Trash Can Joyrides Likely Cause of Barrels in River

by Pete Wann

According to Chad Lorance from the Trinity Regional Water District, the most likely source for the barrels in Steve’s video and inmemoryofradio’s pictures is the trash cans in Riverside Park.

I called the TRWD this morning to find out if they knew anything about the barrels, and if they had any plans to investigate who might have placed them in the river.

After checking with his operations director, Lorance told me that the most likely reason the barrels were there was that people were taking them from Riverside park and rolling them (or possibly IN them) into the river for fun. Apparently this came as no surprise to anyone at TRWD.

His explanation makes sense, and I share his sentiment when he says: “It’s a shame they [barrels and the cars pulled out last week] wind up in the river, it’s not good for the water quality.”

Also, he mentioned that even though they’d rather people not throw tires in the river, they actually provide pretty good habitat for fish.
