Rumor has it that the Rahr & Sons Brewing folks will be hosting a pub crawl on the Near South Side this Friday night.
I’ve been told that they’ll be starting at Chadra Mezza and Grill at 5PM, so be sure you leave work early to get there in time.
Also, for those of you living on the South Side, Chris Cole has challenged you to either walk or ride your bike to Chadra and the on for the rest of the pub crawl. From Chadra I’m guessing they’ll probably go to Finn MacCool’s, then up to Magnolia for a few stops up there. That’s the typical route. Easy to do on a bike!

This shocked the hell out of me—I thought the Covey Restaurant and Brewery was just home to a really pricey menu. Turns out they are also home to one highly regarded Vienna-style lager.
The Covey’s Vienna Lager beat 24 other entries to win the gold medal at the Brewers Association World Beer Cup in San Diego last week. Rahr Brewing won a bronze medal for its Bucking Bock in the German-Style Heller Bock/Maibock category which featured 31 entries overall.
Although the idea of a Beer Olympics sounds made up, it’s true. The Brewers’ Association created the World Beer Cup in 1996 to celebrate the art and science of brewing by recognizing outstanding achievement. It’s a rough job, but someone has to do it.
Congratulations to the winners!
UPDATE: Barry Schlachter had more on the Covey this morning.

I have it on good authority that a number of the Rahr faithful will be meeting at Dutch’s Burgers on University (just south of TCU) at around 5:00 PM tonight for a pub crawl in that area and then down to Bluebonnet Circle.
This is your chance to visit with Fritz Rahr, the brewery’s founder, who’s in town for a brief visit from his temporary job down in the Virgin Islands. (Sounds like a tough life, eh?)
I’ll be there, and I hope to see as many of you there as can make it!

This week:
Special guest Chris Cole from Rahr and Sons Brewing joined us tonight to shoot the breeze for about 25 minutes.
If you’re looking for something to do on Valentines day (besides ride your bike to the Hill Country), check out the swank dinners being offered at Fred’s Texas Cafe and Cafe Modern.
Spend some time at LaGrave Field this summer. Even if you don’t like baseball, you’ll have a good time.
If you can, be sure to get out to the Rahr brewery this Saturday to get a taste of the Bucking Bock. We were drinking it tonight, and it is excellent!
