A busy weekend, and I’d like to call attention to a few things.
First, tonight is Near Southside First Friday on the Green at Magnolia Green Park. Bring your friends and family, along with blankets and chairs, for the second in Fort Worth South’s new series of live music events. Tonight’s First Friday will feature the Josh Weathers Band and JZ & Dirty Pool. The great Chadra Mezza & Grill will be providing food, which is always a big plus.
Magnolia Green is the mixed-use development bounded by Magnolia, Alston, Rosedale, and Hemphill. Magnolia Green Park itself is located on Lipscomb in the heart of the development, across the street from the Magnolia Green Townhomes by Village Homes.
I hope to see a lot of you there - I’ll be in attendance taking photos. Near Southside First Friday on the Green runs from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Admission is free but you can bring a pet toy for the Humane Society.
Secondly, another First Friday - this time, it’s First Fridays at the Modern. Live music and cocktails at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth in the Cultural District along with later hours for Cafe Modern. A docent-led, 20-minute tour of the galleries is available at 6:30 PM. The tour is free for Modern members and Star-Telegram Press Pass holders. Dinner at Cafe Modern will be served from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM and reservations are recommended. Music at tonight’s First Fridays at the Modern will be provided by the Sam Walker Trio.
Finally, I’ve added another venue to the list of places that will be covered in Curtain Call - Embargo in South Downtown (SoDo) is now on the list! Embargo is near the Convention Center on East 8th Street.

Teen-A-Go-Go, a fun little film by Mark Nobles and Melissa Kirkendall about Fort Worth’s teen rock-n-roll scene in the 1960s, will have a free screening on Nov. 16 during the upcoming Lone Star International Film Festival.
The screening begins at 5 p.m. at the Norris Conference Center (the old AMC Sundance Theater) at 304 Houston St. A Q&A with filmmakers follows along with a battle of the bands at 7 p.m. featuring live performances of the music in the film by the musicians in the film Johnny Nitzinger & the Barons, The Elite, Larry & The Blue Notes, The Mods and The Excels and guest emcee Bobby Wygant. Admission is free but you must reserve your spot by calling 817.501.1003 or 817.504.1373 or using the ticketing system on the Lone Star Film Fest website.
Q Cinema is presenting film fest favorite “Pageant” as the last film in their fall series.
From the press release:
The Miss Gay America Pageant has more talent and drama than the Miss America, Miss USA and Miss Universe Pageants combined. To be crowned Miss Gay America is being honored as the most beautiful and fiercely talented female impersonator in the country.
“Pageant” follows five everyday men and their families as they strive for one extraordinary dream. And you’ll hear from the men as well as from those in their entourage: husbands, mothers, sons and little brothers.
“Pageant” runs 95 minutes, and is being screened Wednesday, October 29th at the Four Day Weekend Theater. Tickets are $10, and are available online or at the venue.
Exceptionally well-written and acted, it pushes the envelope of genre conventions, while delivering the requisite thrills and laughs on a micro budget. Decent tech credits are underscored by some intentionally cheesy moments of excessive gore, a welcome respite from hyper-graphic mainstream horror, at least as far as this viewer was concerned. It’s a splatter pic you can take your kids or granny to! Check out the website for notices about future screenings.
This episode sees a few movie and attendee announcements, along with a preview of the parties that will be happening all over town in association with the Festival.

The new Fort Worth Museum Of Science And History is still under construction, but the renovated Omni Theater will reopen this weekend. The Omni has its own entrance now as a standalone building, so the construction on the new museum won’t interfere. Besides the new orange paint job, the Omni boasts a new digital sound system, enhanced lighting, and updated guest facilities. The theater will be showing three new IMAX films this weekend: Dinosaurs Alive!,Deep Sea, and Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs. Check Curtain Call below for show times.
No word just yet if the classic old pre-show helicopter flyover of Fort Worth will still be used. I’d like to see a newly recorded version of it to showcase the city as it stands now. Just as long as it still uses the same music it always has.
Ah, memories. I know I’ve got plenty of the Omni. I remember the many times I stood in that winding, descending ramp in line to the theater when I was a kid. I was there most often with my grandmother, back while I was growing up on a horse ranch out in Parker County. A trip to Fort Worth was always special, and doubly so when we’d go to the Omni. I remember seeing things like “Ring of Fire,” “The Living Sea,” and “Destiny In Space,” usually multiple times. Afterwards we’d go through the museum, and I always wanted to get some of that astronaut ice cream the gift shop sold (yes, I’ve always been a geek. I admit it.). Or alternately, sometimes we’d eat in the museum’s cafeteria, by those windows looking out into that courtyard that used to be there.
It’ll be good to have the Omni back in operation. I just hope they still sell astronaut ice cream.
I don't want to give away all our secrets, but the West and Clear team uses just about every Google product available, including a few not even on that list.
