In keeping with the election-themed dog posts, here’s another opportunity for you to help out our furry friends in the area. Great Dane Rescue of North Texas is hosting a fundraising dinner in support of Guinness’ “campaign” for president in Cedar Hill on Saturday, October 18th. The money raised will go to help pay for the group’s enormous vet bills (big dogs generate big vet bills). The best part is that instead of the usual rubber chicken dinner, you’ll get fantastic Tex-Mex and nice, cold Rahr beer to drink!
Thanks to friend of W&C Jamie for the tip!

Every year, Fort Woof dog park holds a mayoral election to raise money for maintenance and improvements to the park.
This year’s slate of candidates seems pretty strong, but I’m told there are some Karl “Roveran” tactics being used to skew voter turnout and election results. (Sorry, but I am contractually obligated to do that sort of thing.)
Please, if you use the dog park, be sure to give a little money to help keep things nice and to improve it even more.
Also, if you’re looking for something to do next Saturday, check out Barktoberfest @ Fort Woof, benefiting CLASP (Cowtown Loves Animal Shelter Pets) and raising even more money for the park! I’m told that some of the proceeds from Barktoberfest will go to funding the construction of the adoption center at the city animal shelter, something that’s desperately needed to help deserving pets find new permanent homes. You can split your time between the Cowtown Rugby Tournament and Barktoberfest!
Next year, you’ll have the chance to vote for the cutest mayor Fort Woof will have ever had. He’s not ready for the big stage yet, but he’s formed an exploratory committee for next year. (Last I heard, they were digging holes all over the park looking for buried skeletons.)
Thanks to friend of W&C Jason Smith for all the doggone details!

As I’ve said before, one of my favorite restaurants on the Near South Side is Chadra Mezza and Grill. The food is terrific, but it’s the wonderful people that keep me going back. Heck, my wife and I have even been known to pick up a bartending shift or two at the restaurant… we enjoy being there that much!
Nehme and Christina Elbitar recently added outdoor seating behind their Park Place eatery, so every Wednesday night they are inviting folks to bring their dogs to enjoy a night out on the patio. Dogs get a bowl of water and a treat, while their people can enjoy a full bar and selections from the Lebanese/Greek/Italian menu.

The Fort Worth City Council took a major step in the defense of the weakest among us, our pets, on Tuesday by making it illegal to tether, chain, or leave unattended a dog.
This couldn’t have happened without the help and tireless work of Suzette Watkins, who brought pictures to the council to demonstrate just how horrible the conditions for some of these dogs are.
Keep in mind that an ordinance is only as good as the level of enforcement it gets, so let’s hope that the PD follows through.
Thanks for your efforts, Suzette!
