Barbara Crane is known in the world of art photography as an artist and a teacher but above all as an experimenter. Although she started off as a portrait photographer and some of her early work in Chicago definitely is reminiscent of the Lee Friedlander school of street photography, much of the work on display at her career retrospective at the Amon Carter Museum shows a willingness to try new styles and new technologies. I was fortunate enough to spend a few minutes walking though the galleries with Crane last week where we talked about her work.

Pete Wann and I dropped in to Scat Jazz Lounge the other night to talk with Ricki Derek and his business partner, Cary Ray, about music and business. And there was lots to talk about.
Ricki’s got a new self-titled CD out, and Scat is hosting a release party on Saturday night (two shows at 6:30 and 8:30). Also, Ricki and Cary just found out that Scat was selected as one of Down Beat Magazine’s Top 100 Jazz Clubs, joining a list that includes legendary jazz venues like New York City’s Birdland, The Blue Note, The Oak Room at the Algonquin and The Village Vanguard. Not bad for Fort Worth, Texas, eh?
Listen in now and drop by on Saturday night and say congrats! Reserve your tickets early at ticketstothecity.com if you plan to go — they’re expecting two sell outs.

Yes, it’s another West and Clear podcast, this time with “newsy” intro music!
Join Pete Wann and Steve Smith as they discuss what the future holds for Fort Worth, and how many times you’re allowed to say “sh!t” in a PG-13 podcast.
BTW, this podcast is PG-13. Please don’t listen around your infants, but you could maybe sit with your 12 year old while they listen, if you’re the “liberal” type.

Whatever expectations you might have going into a vampire movie, you at the very least expect it to be scary. In that regard, Let The Right One In doesn’t live up to expectations. However, that doesn’t mean that this Swedish film from director Tomas Alfredson isn’t without splatter, immolation, ritual killings, dismemberment and acid to the face. But other than those details, this Swedish import about a 12-year-old misfit named Oskar has a crush on the 12-year-old vampire-next-door, Eli, is the sweetest little vampire movie you’ll ever see.

Jim Bradbury, the District 9 representative on the City’s Gas Drilling Task Force, is West and Clear’s guest for today’s podcast. He discusses the Task Force’s work on this issue, as well as many of other related areas, such as the Trinity Trail and public parks, eminent domain abuse and pipelines, injection wells and setback requirements. I would like to encourage concerned citizens of Fort Worth to attend the Public Hearing on Monday night at 6:30 at City Hall. I’d also like to encourage you to listen to Jim’s explanation of the issues.

I had a chance to sit down with General Director Darren Woods of the Fort Worth Opera last week for a preview of this year’s festival, which kicks off Friday night at the Scott Theatre with Angels in America. Tickets are still available for all four operas. Hope to see you there.
