   It’s a shame. What’s particularly unsettling is that the S-T headquarters has no historic protection, like many of our city’s great buildings. Theoretically, somebody could buy it and tear it down without so much as a hiccup from the city.

   (The nifty jet age Classifieds annex is similarly unprotected.)

   I think the S-T building would make a very interesting residential conversion. Certainly has the history. It needs restoration badly – the awful concrete panels on the ground floor and the mirror tint windows have got to go.

   The International Style of the annex isn’t understood or appreciated AT ALL in these parts. It’s a damned shame….

   Well that is quite the sweeping statement. And not true, I might add. The problem with the annex is not the architectural style, it’s the severe neglect and incomplete state of the exterior. It makes the building look awful, and people can’t see past that. And who could blame the casual observer or passer-by for not caring one whit about that building. I would hope it would be lovingly restored, but that’s a long-shot, getting longer.

   And don’t blame the current financial state of the Star-Telegram. They’ve been neglecting that building for *years*.

   The S-T has been neglecting the Classifieds annex for a long time – that’s very true. I’ve heard it described to me that when it was first built, as the home of Tarrant Savings, it featured translucent blue panels between the fins radiating out from the upper floors. It must have been quite the nifty little building back then. It needs a restoration – a good cleaning, the restoration of the exterior elements, the removal of the mirror tint on the windows, etc.

   It could make a cool little building. I’ve often dreamed of buying it and turning it into a hard-core Mid-Century Modern loft building.
