Arts Goggle – Tonight on the Near Southside
by Kevin Buchanan
Tonight is the night for the fall installment of Arts Goggle on the Near Southside. For the uninitiated, Arts Goggle is an event put on by Fort Worth South, Inc., the group that has led the urbanization of the Near Southside. Local businesses around the district open their doors tonight from 5:00 to 10:00 for an exhibition of local artists and music. This time around, it’s the biggest Arts Goggle yet, featuring fifty-four venues around the district – the big clusters being Magnolia Avenue, Park Place, South Main, and Vickery. Even better, this time around Fort Worth South will be providing a circulator bus and pedicabs, so everybody can enjoy Arts Goggle car-free! A complete program is available here.
I’ve participated in Goggles past – exhibiting my work (Fort Worth urban photography) at Fort Worth Urban Living, Texana Townhomes, and Panther City Bicycles. This time around, I’ve snagged another fantastic spot – I’ll be exhibiting at Spiral Diner, the frighteningly delicious vegan restaurant at Magnolia & 6th. If you attend, stop by and say hello.
(And for the curious – yes, Arts Goggle is free!)
Featured live music for tonight’s Goggle includes:
Trinity Dogs – Sundance Scooters, 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM

What a great weekend for the FW arts community. Between the Arts Goggle tonight on the Near Southside and the Fall Gallery Night tomorrow in the Cultural District we’re quiet the renaissance city.
Kevin, do you have any details on the Saturday night event? WIll you be over there selling your great photographs?
The Cultured Cowtown is the place to be this weekend.
Does that make it sound like we’re a bacteria culture?

Tacoma,
I’m fairly entrenched in the Near Southside universe these days, so I was not aware of the Fall Gallery Night in the CD. For the curious, here’s the link:

And no, I won’t be an artist there – the rest of the weekend will see me return to my work of the previous several days – remodeling my new place in Fairmount. Arts Goggle is my break.

I’m very excited about this event and I’m really looking forward to being able to walk to everything from home!! The art, the music, the food, the people…all of it…
Bring on five o’clock!!

While Arts Goggle typically focuses exclusively on local artists, Gallery Walk in the CD is more of a situation where galleries invite the unwashed masses in to look at very expensive artwork for sale. (That’s a gross and unfair generalization, but I’ve done it a few times and there’s no way I could have afforded 80% of the art on display in these galleries. One had a Mondrian painting available, for example.)
Arts Goggle tends more toward the “funky and local” set.

Is there food for purchase at the arts goggle tonight?

Yes. Many of the venues have free snacks and finger foods, but many of the venues are also restaurants which I’m sure would LOVE for you to linger a bit longer for an entree or two. IMO, you can’t go wrong at any of the locations listed above.
You might try one of the new restaurants down here — The “Original” Yucatan Taco Stand or Tray Chic/Market 1612.

Pete, thanks for the info. I didn’t realize how different they were.
How was the goggle?

Don’t get me wrong. Both are great in their own rights for what they are. I have had a great time at both, and hope to again in the future.
I prefer Arts Goggle because it’s in my neighborhood and the venues are packed with my friends and neighbors, as well as people who don’t get down to the SouthSide very often who hopefully come away impressed by what’s going on down here.
The Goggle was really nice this time. The weather couldn’t have been better (particularly compared to the Spring event, where it POURED all night), and it seemed like all of the venues were packed by 8:00.
Definitely something for FW South, Inc. to be proud of!
