About the Thursday Parks Board Meeting

by Steve Smith

This just in from Friend of West and Clear and Friend of Local Parks Charles Dreyfus:

“It is time to protect Forest Park again, please. Please go to the Special Called Parks Board Meeting on Thursday (January 15) at 7 p.m. at the north end of Botanic Garden Center. Even if you cannot stay, please go for part the meeting.

To find out why, check the jump.

“City of Fort Worth employees and the Fort Worth Zoological Association, Inc. will discuss a contract for control of the Zoo and other land in Forest Park. They have been trying to claim that Zoo boundaries, parking and traffic were all decided years ago.

“Please come SPEAK UP because the City Council can vote on anything it chooses.

> Will we lose soccer field land in Forest Park? Yes, unless you speak up. Can we improve the appearance of the exterior of the zoo? (Please just look at the zoo fence near the Forest Park Swimming Pool.) How much more of Forest Park will get paved? What you think is important.

> What about a new road through Forest Park? Are you surprised? The City Parks Department mentioned it again in May 2008, calling it “Improved access route for buses from University Drive to Zoo entrance without using Colonial Parkway”.

> How much will admission fees and operating subsidies increase?

“Everyone should ask for a copy of the draft contract document because seemingly little wording details may be very important for many years.”

That was a waste. There was no draft document to review. All I got from the session was an explanation of the basics behind the contract renewal (which was very useful for me, since I didn’t know anything going in). When it seemed like time to move on from the history to the future the presentations ended. Apparently they’re still in negotiations and are not ready to present a draft for review.

What concerns me is that with a public meeting completed, will they still have another, once the draft is complete, to receive public comment on the actual draft proposal? The meeting I attended last night hardly serves to complete any requirement for public comment since there was nothing to comment on.

There had better be another public meeting once negotiations are complete and the draft proposal that will be presented to city council is prepared.
