Chesapeake Canvassing the Neighborhoods?
by Pete WannI just got a knock on my door from a representative of Chesapeake who’s going around the neighborhood talking to people about the proposed well site on 8th Ave.
Unfortunately I couldn’t keep my big mouth shut and I told him that I was against the site, so I didn’t get to hear his talking points. (He was very polite and professional; certainly a good ambassador for the company in the brief interaction I had with him.)
After telling him that I was opposed to the site, he asked me why, and I replied that I thought the neighborhoods had made their opinion pretty clear when they banded together to oppose that location.
He then asked “Aren’t you concerned that they’re not going to be able to get to all of it?” Of course I replied as Greg Hughes has before: it’s been there for millions of years, I don’t see any hurry. Plus, I’m not convinced that Boone Pickens and Aubrey McClendon have the country’s best interests at heart. Then I pointed to my truck and said “If that ran on natural gas, I might have a different opinion, but it doesn’t.”
Have you been visited by a Chesapeake representative? Did he/she tell you anything new, or change your mind about the 8th Ave. site?

The Chesapeake canvasers were at a special meeting of the Paschal NA on the 8th Ave issue. They seemed to be most interested in our biggest 8th Ave concerns. One brought up taking a well site tour. I got the impression they wanted to know how to tweak their message to the citizens of the shale.

Chesapeake is tweaking its arguments for the October 7 City Council hearing, as well. From what I have seen and heard, they will be portraying any neighborhoods opposing the well site as rich, white, and privileged, bent on ignoring the plight of a working class neighborhood, like Paschal.

Pete,
Chesapeake’s proposed “improvements” will be published in the next Ryan Place Newsletter.
FYI - They have committed to landscape the area around the site, to install soundproofing, and to *ask* Fort Worth and Western Railroad to stop unloading activities and railcar parking along 8th Ave. Water will be piped in from area streams and carried out by truck on 8th Ave. and Berry.

It was revealed at the last Fairmount NA meeting that Chesapeake is attempting to court the neighborhoods again and is asking them what they want - but there’s talk now that if the neighborhoods continue opposing 8th Avenue, Chesapeake will sue the city of Fort Worth and attempt to run around city regulations in forcing us to abide by the state’s super-lax requirements on distance from homes and such.
There’s terrible things a-brewing, folks. And it’s all for nothing. It’s quite depressing.

Also, Chesapeake has issued a thinly-veiled threat to the mayor and city council members that, if they oppose the well sites, they will find their opponents in the next election very well funded indeed.
