Oktoberfest coming to The Covey

by Bernie

Local brewery/restaurant The Covey makes really good beer. Gold-medal-winning beer.

Now that the beers have gained some international fame, Covey brewmaster Jaime Fulton wants to bring a version of Oktoberfest, that world-famous festival of Beer and Volks, to the Fort. I often find myself disappointed by Americanized Oktoberfests, but I’ve heard good things about the food at the Covey, so I think I’ll give it a try. What’s the wurst that could happen?

The Covey’s Oktoberfest will be held at the restaurant (3010 South Hulen) Friday, September 12 from 3 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and Saturday, September 13 from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

An $18 traditional Bavarian buffet will be featured, and 10% of the proceeds for the weekend will be donated to First Command Educational Foundation, an educational and financial literacy nonprofit.

  1. Not to pull you away from a Fort Worth establishment, but I’ve really enjoyed the Oktoberfest at Caves Lounge in Arlington. They give free grilled brats, schnitzel, saurkraut, and also give you beer “steins” (actually called a Krug in German…Stein really means means “stone”). At some point in the evening they hold their lederhosen competition too! http://www.myspace.com/caveslounge

The beer is brewed fresh at the Covey! Just like in Germany! Did anybody mention it won international awards?

  3. The traditional “Stein” would actually be called a “Steinkrug” (Stone Mug) in Germany, as the typical gray earthenware mug looks a bit like it’s made of stone.

  4. I think it’s safe for me to say that 80% of the W&C crew loves them some Caves. It’s too bad that it’s clear over in Arlington, ’cause I think it would give The Chat Room a run for its money as the 8th Best Bar in FW.

We take solace, however, that Caves’ cousin, The Ozzie Rabbit Lodge, is “technically” in FW, even if it is practically as east as you can get in the city and still make that claim. (No doubt some Handley residents will dispute this and claim it as their own.)

I love any bar where the jukebox is filled with bands who’s names start with “The”, even if I’ve never heard of 90% of them.
