Tandy Hills, Sansom Park on the Agenda

by Steve Smith

The City of Fort Worth Parks Board will discuss the master plan for Tandy Hills Natural Area at their meeting at 4 p.m. this afternoon at the Botanic Gardens Conservatory. This is an important step in the process of protecting and restoring our irreplaceable resource. The board will be receiving the results of the environmental survey and staff recommendations.

The Advisory Board agenda also includes an action item which asks the board to endorse a recommendation for conversion of parkland for a gas pipeline and an above ground valve station in Marion Samson Park. Marion Samson Park, particularly Inspiration Point, is listed on Historic Fort Worth’s 2008 most endangered places list.

As a relative new-comer to Fort Worth (1999), I am sorry to say I was still unaware of the “Inspiration Point at Sansom Park”. Sounds very interesting…. I will have to go check it out sometime.

But I am intimately aware of and involved with Tandy Hills, as it is in my neighborhood. I strongly urge (and plead!) that anyone who can make this meeting this afternoon attend. It is vital that the Parks Board realize there is a committed, determined, impassioned, organized and numerous constituency in support of preserving and enhancing Tandy Hills Natural Area. It has tremendous potential to enhance the diversity of experience and the quality of life of Fort Worth. It is an irreplaceable link to the amazing natural world of “pre-settlement” times, and a priceless laboratory and classroom for understanding the ecology of our region.

Please come to the meeting and stand up for our fellow life forms (plants, animals, etc.) that can’t advocate for themselves. They need you, and we too often forget that we need them.

If you can’t make the meeting, please pass on your support for the Tandy Hills Master Plan to any and all City representatives you can.
