Bud Kennedy Weighs In On Kincaid’s
by Steve SmithBud Kennedy informs us that Kincaid’s is staying put on Camp Bowie after all. Days before a threatened eviction, the owners of the legendary burger joint have reached an 11th-hour agreement to keep their location in the former grocery store where it has been for 62 years.
Bud also opened the door to one of the most passionate ongoing debates in this town: “Fort Worth and Arlington both are great hamburger towns,” he writes. “Plenty of diners have other favorites such as Fred’s Cafe or Tommy’s Hamburgers in Fort Worth or Al’s Hamburgers in Arlington, along with plenty of new-wave burger cafes.”
What’s your favorite? It think Kincaid’s and Tommy’s are good. Al’s will do if you have to be in Arlington. But Terry Chandler’s FredBurger is the gold standard in my book. I’ll put a FredBurger with grilled jalapenos and cold Rahr up against all comers.

I guess you haven’t been out to far West Fort Worth (aka Jacksboro) and had a burger at Herd’s?

I haven’t been there. But I want to go. Now.

I know it’s a chain, but Baker St. has a really great blue cheese burger.

Kincaids makes a good burger, actually not too far off from Al’s.
However, if I was going to have a burger I’d probably head over to Fred’s for the Chipotle burger. Sure it’s a $10.00 burger, but would be well worth it. Plus their fries are killer.

Another vote for Lili’s with the gargonzola sauce off the lunch menu. Very similar is the #5 at Dutch’s. Bleu cheese & bacon. Tastes similar, but less messy. Both are top notch. Haven’t been to Fred’s, but will have to go.

I’ll third and fourth (always get two) the Lili’s House Burger with gorgonzola cheese and bacon. I firmly believe we will someday harness the power of this burger to solve our energy problems.
However, Kincaid’s is long-time favorite and just like your grandpa, we must remember to show due respect. I just ate lunch and I’m so hungry right now.

I think FW sports a pretty strong burger triad with Kincaid’s, Dutch’s, and Fred’s. I need to try Lili’s sometime to see for myself how it fits in with the others. I’ll give honorable mentions to M&O Station and Tommy’s, but I think both are definitely a rung below the three others I mentioned.
As for Al’s, I hate to be the naysayer, but I’ve never understood the hype surrounding that place. I thinks it’s a case of a burger joint building a reputation on longevity and not on a quality product.

how about a shout out to the occasional quickway (corner of clover and vickery) burger!
i especially like that i can pay all my back utilities to some guy behind a steel cage while waiting on my burger : )

My top 5 burgers in FW are:
1. Lili’s
2. Fred’s
3. Love Shack
4. Dutch’s
5. Charlie’s
Kincaids is way, way down the list, maybe off the list. They have not been very good for a while now. I can’t figure out why people like Kincaids.

I don’t get the Dutch’s fans. The buns are too sweet, and the meat always tastes like it is just this side of rancid. Love Shack, Kinkaid’s, and Tommy’s are far better in my book.

I’d rather eat at McDonald’s than Dutch’s. I haven’t eaten at McDonald’s since 1994.
1.) Fred’s
2.) Charlie’s
3.) Malt Shop (Weatherford)
4.) Woody’s (Mineral Wells)
5.) Snuffers (I know it’s in Dallas, but I hear that might change in the near future)

has anyone tried the Love Shack? I was a little disappointed…good burger but the “love sauce” on it was really strange and not in a good way.

Nothing against Mr. Love, but I think I’d feel weird eating something called “love sauce.” Maybe it’s just me.
I’m on a diet now anyway, so no burgers for me. Perhaps some point in the future.

You know, I’ve had the pleasure of having Grady Spears’ cooking before. The guy make unbelievably awesome BBQ and is an excellent chef in general. Based on Grady’s reputation as a genius I took a very large lunch group over to Dutch’s once. Nobody, unfortunately, was particularly pleased. The overly sweet buns were a turn off, as was the price, and the quality of the meat - wellll it was pretty good, but not really very close to Fort Worth’s other awesome burger joints.
Having said that, this collection of folks had been making the rounds of Fort Worth burger joints in the quest for the best place, so we were extremely critical. Tommy’s is just extremely hard to beat for overall value and quality (note - I-30 location only. 7th street location, not so much). Kincaid’s - it’s just really really good and right up there. I hate to say it, but dang that Pappa’s burger was good too. And Freds - love the Fred’s. If you’re gonna get a bleu cheese burger it might as well be Fred’s - cuz you get like a whole tub of cheese on your burger.
But I think we have to call foul on recommending a burger from a “Bistro”. That’s just wrong, isn’t it? I mean, what’s next, recommending the Chicken Fried Steak at la Madeline?

tommy’s was good in a normal way, kincaids is good but not incredible.
love shack is a great distinctive burger. fresh meat with half sirloin/half brisket and a better value than Fred’s and Dutch’s by far. Have to say it… goin into the burbs will get you some great burgers. Johnny B’s and Snuffer’s in southlake come to mind

The best burger I’ve had in recent memory is the “Flying Goose SteakBurger” at (where else?) the Flying Goose Steakhouse in Lampassas, TX.
Bernie and I stopped there on our way to Austin for the Democratic Convention.
