Fort Worth Brewers Bring Home the Hardware
by Steve-OThis shocked the hell out of me—I thought the Covey Restaurant and Brewery was just home to a really pricey menu. Turns out they are also home to one highly regarded Vienna-style lager.
The Covey’s Vienna Lager beat 24 other entries to win the gold medal at the Brewers Association World Beer Cup in San Diego last week. Rahr Brewing won a bronze medal for its Bucking Bock in the German-Style Heller Bock/Maibock category which featured 31 entries overall.
Although the idea of a Beer Olympics sounds made up, it’s true. The Brewers’ Association created the World Beer Cup in 1996 to celebrate the art and science of brewing by recognizing outstanding achievement. It’s a rough job, but someone has to do it.
Congratulations to the winners!
UPDATE: Barry Schlachter had more on the Covey this morning.

Last summer, the Covey had a mad delicious Coconut Brown Ale (at least I think it was a brown ale). It was so tasty, we bought a growler to go.

Had to be something other than the Coconut Brown Ale. That was one of the beers Covey opened with (and Jamie swore he would never brew again) and they didn’t get growlers until last summer.

Weird. It was late April or early May (had my wallet stolen that night), pretty much exactly a year ago. I know it was coconut because I have a thing for coconutty delights and I mos def bought a growler (that Pete W has now). I really liked it. I am sorry to hear they weren’t happy with it. On the whole, The Covey makes prettty darn good beer. The food is pretty alright too.
Maybe Beer Abbey AND the Gastrognome need to make a trip down there.
PS–Paul, I added your blog to our links list in the side column
