Haiku Contest: We Have Winners
by Steve-OAfter a arduous decision process, the winners of the Steve Buckellew Memorial PrairieFest Haiku Contest 2008 have been decided. Our grand prize winner is …
Lynn Risser! Here’s her haiku:
Neighbors move in, out,
Their dark home now up for sale,
Their cat at my door.
I think it was the cat image that put this one over the top. Or tapping into the angst brought on by the housing bust. Anyway, as our first place winner, Lynn wins a tour of Tandy Hills Park by PrairieFest organizer Don Young, a Panther City Bikes gift card, a Rahr Brewery t-shirt and Fort Worth Cats tickets.
Second Place: Matt Latham
Plants make good views now.
Beer makes good views later.
Fort Worth has good views.
Obviously playing to the judges. Beer imagery works every time. Matt wins a Kevin Buchanan framed photograph, a Rahr Brewing glass and a Rahr brewing hat.
Third Place: Jim Marshall
By the Trinity,
the blue bird, once very rare
now is often seen.
Nature … it’s all around us. Jim wins a Pete Geniella photograph, a Rahr Brewing glass and a Rahr t-shirt.
Fourth Place: Don Young
What is a prairie?
Come see before it’s all gone.
See and understand.
Wow, Don. You run the event and still have time to write poetry. Well done. Don gets a Kevin Buchanan photograph and a Rahr brewing hat.
Fifth Place: Brad Newman
Haiku, I love you
Fort Worth born, live in a shoe
Peace and love’n too
Everyone was obviously swayed by Brad’s charisma on the podcast. Or the living in a shoe thing. Brad wins a Rahr Brewing t-shirt.
Thanks to all who entered! Let’s do it again next year.

W&C keeps me learning new things. Like Haiku. Never heard of it before so where have I not been that I should have. A lot of places. Like W&C and Tandy Hills and Prairie Fest.

Gee, I’m speechless. I put this honor way up there with my FW Weekly, Best Rabbleeouser award from ‘06.
Seriously, it was great having West and Clear at Prairie Fest and I hope to have both back next year. Your presence added a lot to the fest and gave it added credibility. I also want to thank you again for being one of our ad sponsors.
Thank you, too, for the generous prizes, especially the photo from Kevin. I am a very big fan of his astonishing photo art. I’d like to return the favor by offering Kevin a tour of the Tandy Hills some afternoon in say, mid summer. How ’bout it Kevin?
