Pics from Modern ‘Til Midnight

by Kevin Buchanan

Last Friday’s Modern ‘Til Midnight went off well, as always. Steph and I worked our way over a little after 7:30, which meant we got there just in time to enjoy the musical stylings of The Theater Fire. Having never heard these guys before, I must say I enjoyed their set very much. Their music is more or less unclassifiable, blending a wide variety of elements and instruments (mariachi horns, accordion, mandolin, etc.). They pretty much rock. I grabbed both their albums off iTunes the next day. (The dancing cowboy hippies that accompanied their set were entertaining, as well.)

Dancing cowboy hippies - ask for them by name!

We wandered around the museum for a long while, taking in the exhibits (this was the first time I’d been through the Martin Puryear exhibit), and eventually wound up at Cafe Modern for some of their fantastic food. Steph had the Whole Grain Risotto (farro, quinoa, and amaranth with mushroom-vegetable broth and parmesan cheese with roasted greens and balsamic roasted shallots), and I had the Grilled Cheese Trio (tallegio, roasted grapes, and caramelized onion on sourdough; brie, roasted peppers, and olives on multigrain; and smoked gouda and turkey on pumpernickel served with herbs de provence chips). It was all wonderful, as is usually the case. For dessert, we split a slice of the insanely tasty S’mores Cheesecake (rich chocolate cheesecake in a graham crust topped with marshmallow fluff and milk chocolate).

While enjoying the outdoor dining area at the cafe, I took these three shots of our surroundings:

We listened to bits and pieces of the Trimble Tech marching band and PPT before finally heading out around 10:30 PM (too sleepy to make it to midnight this time). A grand time was had by all - I’d like to thank Dustin and the gang at the Modern for putting on another fantastic Modern ‘Til Midnight. Steph and I got some friends of ours to come for the first time, and they had a great time as well - the word is finally getting out about how cool and creative this city is.

Now, a selection of some other photos I took that night.
