Sad News About Our Friend, SteveB
by Steve-O
SteveB, the creator of Fort Worth Blogorrhea, an occasional contributor to West and Clear and our partner in crime in witty, thoughtful and sometimes ribald blogging, slipped the bonds of this mortal coil on Tuesday.
Known to his family and loved ones as Stephen Hunter Buckellew, he was 39 and passed away on Tuesday evening after a brief illness. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday morning at 11 at Mueller Harper. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to The WARM Place, 809 Lipscomb St., Fort Worth, Texas 76104, in Steve’s memory.
A native and lifelong resident of Fort Worth, Steve was the son of Cleveland Oren “Buck” Buckellew Jr. and Pamela Ann Hunter Buckellew. He graduated from Southwest High School in 1987 and Texas A&M University before receiving his M.S. from the University of Texas at Arlington.
Steve was a true intellectual with varied pursuits spanning literature, music, movies, politics, blogging, crossword puzzles, woodworking, photography, food and sports. He was also a highly talented pool player. Above all, Steve was friend to countless who will treasure the many good times enjoyed and lament the lost opportunities to share in his company. He will be deeply missed.
Survivors: Steve is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Richardson; mother and stepfather, Pam and Al Esquivel; brothers and sisters-in-law, Phil and Lisa Buckellew and Bruce Hervey and Katie Barber; grandmother, Christine Wesley; parents-in-law, Jim and Ann Richardson; brother-in-law, James Richardson; and many throughout Fort Worth and beyond whom he called friends.
Those of us here at West and Clear who got to know a little bit about Steve send our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to his family. We considered him one of us.

Haiku for SteveB:
Our friend Steve is Gone,
although his words will stay here.
Thus we won’t forget.

Deepest Condolences. I loved his first article and his work on Blogorrhea.
That we can uphold his talent in writing. That we can be as worthy Fort Worthians. I raise my pint of Rahr in salute to you, Steve. Rest in Peace. Rejoice in Memories.
A.L. Frink wrote that Near a shady wall a rose once grew,
Budded and blossomed in God’s free light:
Watered and fed by morning dew,
Shedding its sweetness day and night.
As it grew and blossomed fair and tall,
Slowly rising to loftier height,
It came to a crevice in the wall,
Through which there shone a beam of light.
Onward it crept with added strength
With never a thought of fear or pride,
It followed the light through the crevice length,
And unfolded itself on the other side.
The light, the dew, the broadening view
Were found the same as they were before.
And it lost itself in beauties new.
Breathing its fragrance more and more.
Shall claim of death cause us to grieve,
And make our courage faint or fall?
Nay, let us faith and hope receive,
The rose still grows beyond the wall.
Scattering fragrance far and wide,
Just as it did in days of yore.
Just as it did on the other side,
Just as it will forevermore.

Steve and I agreed on little outside scotch, cigars, food, and art. There is no one on earth I would rather spend an evening disagreeing with over pints…. I always left with a much broader view and no doubt that agreeing with Steve was never a condition of his friendship. I’ll miss you Buck.

I only knew Steve online, and am now thoroughly bummed that I’ll never get to meet him.
Somewhere in all of this (see link below) is Steve’s attempt to LiveBlog a brisket, complete with a side trip into the proper use of semicolons.
He was apparently one of a kind.

Buck, your voice is still echoing in my head from conversations we had years ago (these were usually one-sided as I sat slack jawed and could only come up with “… yea, I didn’t think of that… go ahead and rack ‘em.. want another round?”).
I recall your bachelor party with fond memories. Classic Buckellew. Just a small group of guys in the rain at PK, smoking meat (which according to you was destroyed because we were starving and didn’t let it rest enough. I don’t think it even made it on a plate), playing over the house whiffle ball with rules made up on the spot and sharing stories. Maybe to some that might not sound like much, but how wrong they would be.
I appreciate your friendship and honored to call you my friend. Rest in peace, save me a seat at the bar and put the tab in my name.
