Drinking Liberally in Fort Worth
by BernieCome raise your spirits as you raise a pint as America’s network of progressive drinking clubs arrives in Fort Worth.
Drinking Liberally is an informal, non-programmatic gathering of like-minded left-leaners, an opportunity to share you ideas while you share a pitcher. You don’t need to be a seasoned activist or policy wonk to join us in meeting new friends, reconnecting with old ones, and enjoying a stiff mix of socializing with a dash of politics.
PeteW and I will be hosting Fort Worth’s inaugural DL gathering at Buffalo Bros. (3015 S. University Dr.) this Thursday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m.
America was born in the taverns…and now we’re returning to promote democracy one pint a time.
The Revolution begins at Happy Hour; we’ll see you there.

My daughter introduced me to this website about a month ago. I’ve had to visit it several times to get a feel for it, for its personality. When the Internet became of practical use to all of us in the mid ’90s, it occurred to me that its most powerful aspect is the relatively inexpensive universal communication of information. Since then, most sites I’ve frequented or casually hit have been either technical or banal. I’m sure I’ve visited websites as subtilely sophisticated as westandclear, but I can’t recall one. This website brings to light aspects of Fort Worth culture I did not know existed, and I’ve lived here all my life. I don’t subscribe to Fort Worth’s newspaper of general circulation; a better description of it is a newspaper of generic information. The Fort Worth Weekly does a good job on local stories with an editorial bent, such as Chesapeak Oil’s intrusion into our neighborhoods. But unlike the Internet, the printed media provides no immediate access to its syblings. And so I lay here relaxing in bed this a.m. moving my mouse around my laptop’s (bellytop) lcd screen and learn of the first Drinking Liberally get-together and the 3rd annual Tandy Hills festival.

@Andy - You can drink conservatively, moderately, or liberally. You’re still welcome to come and talk with folks. Anyone is welcome, so long as they keep it civil.
@Ridge - We’re glad you’re here, and we appreciate your comments! Hope to see more of them in the future!

Dang! I’ll be out of town (will be visiting my hometown for Fiesta 2008), but this sounds like something I’d love to attend. Keep me posted on the date and time of the next gathering.

They’ll be the last Thursday of every month, so the next one is Thursday, May 29 at 6:30 at Buffalo Bros.

Pete, on local issues, I think we have more in common than in contrast. And I’ll drink to that. If I do make it, I’ll just move closer to the jukebox when the issues go national. It is an interestng year, though isn’t it?
Ancient Chinese Fortune (or curse?): May you live in interesting times.

@Mondalejones - You’re welcome to stop in! They serve soft drinks too!
Andy, these are certainly interesting times. Drinking Liberally is a non-programmatic gathering, we don’t (can’t, actually) endorse candidates, and we can’t (won’t, actually) be sponsored by other “liberal” groups. We have no dogma or agenda, really it’s just a place for folks who share some of the same values to get together and talk. I think you’ll be surprised that you probably share opinions on national issues with some of us, as well.
