Deja Vu, Take Five
by Kevin BuchananStill wondering if this whole blogging/”new media” business can affect the greater discourse? The latest example that it can - we break the story on the University Park Village Apple Store, and four days later, the Star-Telegram follows us. On its own, this wouldn’t mean much - but lately, the pages of the Star-Telegram have often seemed like the pixels of West and Clear from four days to a month before.
Now, it’s been rather flattering to be the S-T’s story preparation source, but this is the first time the (kind of) local daily has decided to give us credit for it. So, genuinely, I’d like to say “thanks” to the Star-Telegram for playing nice in the 21st century with some reciprocal linkage at long last (seriously, it’s only right - we do it every time we talk about them). Thanks, guys.
And you’re welcome.
Nobody does it better,
Makes me feel sad for the rest.
Nobody does it half as good as you,
Baby, you’re the best.

The upside about that article is the reporter not only actually called Apple, but then did additional research with the city to see if building permits had been filed AND called the realtor leasing the site.
Good job anonymous Star-T reporter.
One thing to consider; the reason a blog was quoted was because a reporter didn’t have to take credit for the story.
Think about it….

Calling Apple in this case is rather pointless. I appreciate that they did it for completeness’ sake, but “no comment” is virtually all Apple ever says about their store openings until they’re about to happen. Seeing a job listing, though, is about as strong a confirmation as you’re going to get.
I’m not sure I get where you’re going there with the last bit - if you’re saying the story wasn’t newsworthy, I respectfully disagree.

I agree with Adam — the article did advance the story by calling the realtor and an Apple rep, as well as checking the building permits. I appreciate the fact that the reporter also gave proper attribution to W&C instead of just citing the job posting on the Apple site and calling it at that. It’s a development I welcome.

The attribution was my point - it’s good to see them return the favor at last.

I’m not a reporter, nor do I claim to play one on teh internets.
However, if I see lightning and hear thunder, and my face is wet, I’m pretty sure I’m standing in a thunderstorm. I don’t need to call Troy Dungan to confirm it, or pull out the old Webster’s to look up the real definition of thunderstorm, then get a thunderstorm denyer on the phone to “balance” the story.
In this case, I relied on my years of experience both as an Apple employee and a fanboi to come to the conclusion that if Apple is listing job openings for a specific location, then they’re about to open a store there, based on their previous history of DOING EXACTLY THAT.
Adam, you’re right; the S-T did provide more info. That’s a good thing. But I provided exactly the same info more succinctly, and you didn’t have to pay 50 cents for it.

Pete: people don’t pay 50 cents for the S-T on the Internets — they just have to endure pop-up ads.

The Dallas Morning News picked up the Apple info from ya’ll as well. Congrats, your blog is now providing material for the “major” papers in both counties. Considering all the rumored layoffs at the Startlegram I expect it won’t be too long before it becomes a print version of West and Clear.
