Eighth Avenue Drilling Site Update

by Steve-O

Is Chesapeake backpedaling on the Eighth Avenue drilling site? Maybe.

Seems that many of you in the Ryan Place, Mistletoe Heights and Berkeley neighborhoods have been letting City Hall know that you aren’t happy with this development. And City Hall seems to be listening.

I’m told by people who would know that if a high-impact variance was filed for this drilling location, the chance of it getting it through City Council is somewhere between slim and none.

And on that note, the spinning begins. Chesapeake Energy now says, in effect, just kidding about the Eighth Avenue site.

They are telling people that — gosh, even though it’s hard — they’ll find another site to conduct drilling under the Baylor/All Saints site. Chesapeake also says it has a contractual obligation with the Fort Worth & Western Railroad to file a drilling permit for that location, but it is in the process of renegotiating the contract. However, Chesapeake is still very careful not to close the door on this drilling site.

And why should they. These are very patient people with deep pockets. They can play the waiting game, buy a few more billboards, and — when people aren’t paying attention — slide something through. As the gas drilling ordinance task force gets up and running, I hope that the people of Fort Worth will make it clear to city officials and gas drilling companies: we want safe neighborhoods and a clean environment. We won’t allow a gas well on just every corner.

Here Here! As someone who lives in that neighborhood I couldn’t be more delighted in hearing that news.

  3. Power to the people….I love it! We will see if East Ft. Worth gets the same nod from City Hall & Chesapeake as do the aforementioned neighborhoods. Even if we don’t, I’m thrilled for these residents. From what I have seen, read and heard and experienced, Chesapeake would like to play all of us residents in Fort Worth as ignorant fools. Thanks westandclear.
