This is a Big Deal. Saturday night the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra is performing at Carnegie Hall, debuting Mariel by Osvaldo Golijov, a piece commissioned by Sid and Mercedes Bass. And you can hear it live, on WRR FM 101.1 at 6:30 PM on January 26th. The FWSO will also kick out the Tchaikovsky and Brahms.
Whiskey, Texas is becoming my favorite blog. I am a total sucker for hobo art, “Ghost” Signs in Fort Worth, and railroad photos.
In the same vein as Whiskey, Texas (and courtesy of, too) is the blog Under the Weather, which features a best of 2007 portfolio of some amazing photos including this awesome long exposure shot of a train going through the old Tindall Records building tunnel in downtown Fort Worth.
Ken over at the Stash Dauber has a fascinating series of interviews with his mother. Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and this and this. Such an excellent idea. We should all interview our parents; everyone has a story to tell.
The Great Southwest Bike Swap is going down this Sunday, the 27th, at the Tarrant County Resource Connection. Swap your bike, buy a new one, enter the raffles or do what I would do and check out the noon-time viewing the classic road cycling documentary A Sunday in Hell about the 1976 Paris-Roubaix Spring classic. Some folks say it’s the best cycling film ever made. EVER.
Also this weekend is the Django Reinhardt Festival at Arts Fifth Avenue. Celebrate the life and work of the Gypsy Jazz King with films, live music and workshops.
The Library of Congress is loading its photo archive onto Flickr. Check out the Fort Worth collection and the Texas collection.
Adam D. is blogging from the Sundance/Slamdance Film Festivals. Looks cold.
Everybody loves those off-the-wall office hijinks and Texas Tailwind has a good one.
West and Clear Viewfinder alum David Kozlowski had one of his photos, splashed all over the background of Yahoo!’s 2007 News In Review quiz.
Fort Worth Hole in the Wall knows how to win Bernie’s favor…run a mouth watering review of Taqueria San Luis.
A hot tip via Whisper in a Panther’s Ear led me to DFWandme.com. It’s an ambitious blog that highlights the best buildings, places and events in the Metroplex. Check out this quote in the recent write up of Bass Performance Hall “Poor Dallas; compared to Ft. Worth, the Big D’s pretty much a cultural backwater, and the existence of the Bass–which would not be out of place in New York or the Continent, incidentally–just makes it all the more obvious.”
The Startle-Gram’s website is purty now.
Dallas Photographer Justin Terveen has an undeniable style that he imparts on his architectural photography. He spends most of his time documenting the buildings of that other city, but recently he decided to document Fort Worth. Check out his impressive Fort Worth photos here.
And because you love us and we are best-friends-forever, please drop by Fortworthology, The Caravan of Dreams, The Cowtown Chronicles, The Panther City blog, and One Third Vignette.
