West and Clear Podcast - “Why We Love Fort Worth”
by Pete WannThis week on the show:
- Discussion of the recent events at the Lone Star Film Society, as well as our coverage of the possible effects on the Lone Star Film Festival.
- The Stock Show is going on downtown. Pete took some awesome pictures, and the Star-Telegram is providing some excellent coverage. Think of them as the play-by-play and us as the color commentary.
- Budget Travel magazine writes up the 25 things they love about Fort Worth, MSNBC picks it up, and while we like some of it, we’re all bothered by the fact that our WORLD-CLASS museums (how many times do we have to say that before people take notice?) come in at number 8.
- Steve sat down with Darren Woods, Managing Director of the Fort Worth Opera, to talk about the upcoming season and where he thinks the Opera in Fort Worth is headed. Look for his writeup on that interview later this week. Also, I commit to going to one of the shows with Steve, despite my general avoidance of all things opera.
We had a good time recording this one, we hope you enjoy it, and thanks for listening!

I’ve been to Joe T. Garcia’s more than once. I must be an “idiot.”
Have you guys ever had BBQ outside of Texas? If you haven’t, try it. Then you’ll see why people rave about the BBQ here in Texas…
I don’t think you’re being too critical when it comes to the LSFF topic; however, I do think you’re being a bit too critical with regards to an article that’s really, really, ridiculously in favor of Fort Worth.
That, and food is simply more popular than museums. Way it goes. Beginning an article with something delicious perks up the average reader. Remember: she’s speaking primarily to people who haven’t necessarily been to Fort Worth, and further, probably have never thought about the possibility of visiting Fort Worth.

Have you been to only Joe T.’s and not any other Mexican restaurant in Fort Worth? If so, then I’ll agree with your self-assessment.
Joe T.’s is a nice place to impress out-of-towners with the atmosphere and ambiance, but the food is really not that good. So, I suppose it should be included on these kinds of lists, but I wish they’d list a couple of other Mexican places (my fav is La Playa Maya, but why not La Familia or something else) as alternatives when the line is stretched around the block. It’s DEFINITELY not food worth waiting in line for.
I agree that the article is slanted toward people who’ve never been to Fort Worth. However, if you’re telling people about our city, (or your city, or whatever), what’s the first thing YOU tell them about? Say someone is enticed to come here based on that article, and they only visit the places that are listed. Are those the things you want Fort Worth to be represented by, and for those out-of-towners to experience? Fort Worth has a LOT to offer, and her choices weren’t necessarily bad, but in light of the alternatives that COULD have been offered, I take exception to them. We’re going to come up with our own list, and we’ll post it here soon.
As for BBQ outside of Texas, I grew up in Ohio, where a large portion of the meat I was served as a kid came out of a can or was frozen. Any BBQ is good BBQ to me. I had some awesome ribs a the Montgomery Inn in Cincinnati (Memphis-style), but I don’t see myself liking Carolina-style too much.

I’m going to support Adam a little on this one. Joe T’s is what it is. It wouldn’t be my first choice for Mexican food in FW, but I’ve never had a bad meal there. Of course, I was usually drunk at the time. So that might factor in.
And Adam is dead on with one point: Carolina BBQ is teh suck. Mustard and vinegar based sauces turn my stomach. However, I will not argue to pig vs. cow BBQ point. With my apologies to James, I find pigs and cows equally tasty.

Don’t worry, I’m not bothered by people liking flesh. It’s just the way it gets to the plate that offends me.

Well, if it is any consolation, I’m not crazy about a lot of it either. Industrialized meat production is kind of scary.

I didn’t see much BBQ in Southern California outside of the high-desert area of Joshua Tree and 29 Palms. (There’s a BBQ joint there that holds its own against the best of Texas = Don’s Real American BBQ.)
In northern California, specifically in the SF Bay area, there’s a chain of restaurants called Armadillo Willie’s. It’s not great, but it’s brisket and ribs and fixin’s, with real Texas BBQ sauce.
I feel you on the Tex Mex thing, too, but I also really like the Baja style Mexican y’all get in San Diego County.
I’d give up BBQ and Tex-Mex if I could have the high number of REALLY GOOD brew-pubs in California. Man, I miss Pizza Port.
